People assume the Dutch can't do glamorous dining, and to those people I say: you've been eating bitterballen at the wrong bar. Amsterdam has quietly built a roster of luxury restaurants that are not just expensive but genuinely fun, the kind of places where the food is theatrical, the room is gorgeous, and you leave feeling like you starred in your own little film. After fourteen years and a frankly irresponsible number of tasting menus, here are my favorites.

House of Noa

House of Noa is what happens when someone designs a restaurant for people who want to be seen having a wonderful time. The interiors are lush and Instagram-ready without trying too hard, and the menu leans into bold, shareable, globally-inspired plates. It's the spot I bring friends who think "fine dining" means "quiet and stiff." Here it means cocktails, candlelight, and a soundtrack that makes you order one more course than you planned. Come hungry and come ready to linger.

Petite Peche

Don't let the dainty name fool you, Petite Peche delivers some of the most charming dining in the city. It's intimate, a little flirtatious, and built around beautiful seafood and produce treated with real care. This is my go-to for a romantic evening or a celebratory dinner where you want the food to do the talking. The portions are elegant rather than enormous, which simply means you have moral permission to order dessert. I always do.

Restaurant Roux

Restaurant Roux is for the nights you want to feel like a proper grown-up with excellent taste. The cooking is refined and confident, the service knows exactly when to appear and when to vanish, and the whole experience has that hushed luxury rhythm. It's the kind of place where you toast to something, even if the something is simply having survived another Amsterdam winter. Book ahead, dress the part, and let the kitchen show off.

Madame

And then there's Madame, which is exactly as fabulous as she sounds. This is glamour with a wink, a destination restaurant where the styling, the lighting, and the energy all conspire to make a regular Thursday feel like an occasion. It's dramatic in the best possible way, perfect for a group that wants to dress up, drink well, and make a night of it. I have never once left Madame in a bad mood, which is more than I can say for most of my exes.

How to do it right

A few notes from someone who has made all the mistakes so you don't have to:

  • Reserve early. All four of these fill up, especially on weekends and through the busy summer months.
  • Dress with intention. Amsterdam is casual, but these rooms reward a little effort, and you'll feel better for it.
  • Make it a journey. Cocktails at one spot, dinner at another, a nightcap somewhere with a view. The city is small and walkable; use that.
  • Tell them you're celebrating. Even if you're just celebrating yourself. Especially then.

Luxury dining in Amsterdam isn't about stuffy formality, it's about delight. These four restaurants understand that a great meal should be an event, a performance, a memory. Go be the main character. You've earned it, and the bitterballen will still be there tomorrow.
