Private Weed Tour in Amsterdam: Just Your Group, Your Pace

A private weed tour in Amsterdam is the simplest idea we have. It is our cannabis culture tour, but nobody else is on it. Just you, your people, and a host who knows these streets the way a cab driver knows the potholes. You pick the day. You pick the time. You pick how fast or slow it goes.

I'm Erik. I moved to Amsterdam from Philadelphia, and I have been guiding this city since 2012. That is 14 years of rainy Tuesdays, packed Saturdays, nervous first-timers and old pros. Over those years, one request kept coming back. People said, "We love the idea. But can it just be us?"

Yes. It can. Any of our tours can be private — just your group, your date, your pace. Private tours start at €295 excl. VAT for the whole group. Not per person. For the whole group.

This guide explains what a private cannabis tour actually is, who it suits best, what you can change, what it costs, and how to ask for one. We'll also be honest about what it is not.

What is a private weed tour in Amsterdam?

It is a guided walk through the history and culture of cannabis in Amsterdam, with visits to two or three licensed coffeeshops. A coffeeshop is a shop that sells cannabis. A café sells coffee. Mixing those two words up is the oldest joke in town.

On the private version, the group is only yours. There are no strangers. There is no fixed start time. Your host works for your group and nobody else for the whole tour.

Our public group tour is called Cannabis Culture & Coffeeshop Etiquette. It lasts about 2.5 hours. It meets at Beursplein, in front of the Beurs van Berlage on the Damrak. That is about five minutes on foot from Centraal Station. The private tour uses the same knowledge and the same care. It just bends around you.

Here is what stays the same on every version:

  • The tour is strictly 18+. We check photo ID. The coffeeshops do too.
  • We visit two to three licensed coffeeshops.
  • We do not sell, supply or arrange cannabis. Products are not included.
  • Nobody has to consume anything. Plenty of guests don't.
  • We ask you to eat first, drink water, and skip the alcohol.

Who is a private cannabis tour best for?

A group tour is great. It's cheap, social, and you meet people from Ohio and Manchester and Madrid. But some groups just fit better on their own. Here's who books private with us most.

Couples and honeymooners

Some couples want a slow, quiet evening. They want to sit, talk, ask questions and not hurry. A private tour lets you do that. You can stop for fries in a paper cone halfway through. Nobody's waiting on you.

Nervous first-timers

Maybe you've never tried cannabis. Maybe you tried it once in college in 1998 and it did not go well. That is normal. On a private tour you can ask the "dumb" questions out loud. There are no dumb questions here. We've heard them all, and most of them are smart.

Birthday groups, stag dos and hen parties

Ten friends with a plan and a group chat full of opinions. A private tour keeps you together and on your schedule. If you're planning a bigger weekend, see our Amsterdam stag do and bachelor party guide.

Company trips and conference groups

Yes, really. Plenty of work groups want a cultural night out that's a bit different. The history of Dutch drug policy is a great talk. It's about law, cities, politics and public health. Nobody has to consume. Many don't.

Older travellers and families of adults

Parents visiting grown kids. Retired friends from Florida or Yorkshire. People who want a slower walk, more benches, more history. A private tour can go at walking pace, not marching pace.

Guests with mobility needs

Amsterdam is old. The streets are cobbled. Some coffeeshops have steps. On a private tour, your host can plan a shorter route with fewer stairs. Tell us when you enquire.

What can you customise on a private coffeeshop tour?

This is the fun part. A private coffeeshop tour is a frame, not a script. Here's what you can shape.

  1. Date and time. Morning, afternoon, or evening. Weekday or weekend. You pick.
  2. Pace. Fast and lively, or slow and chatty. We match you.
  3. Language. We guide in English, Spanish, German and Dutch.
  4. The style of shops. Some groups want a cozy local spot with plants in the window. Some want one of the long-running famous names. Some want a quiet place to sit. Tell us your vibe and your host chooses.
  5. How much history. Some guests want the full story, from the 1976 Opium Act change to today's debates. Others want the short version and more time sitting down.
  6. Your starting point. The standard meeting point is Beursplein. For private groups we can often talk about other options.
  7. Before and after. Our concierge desk can help with dinner bookings, a canal cruise, live music or our Rockstar for a Day DJ workshop.
  8. A full day. You can roll the tour into a private concierge day in Amsterdam, with hotel pickup and reservations made for you.

One thing you can't customise: the rules. Everyone must be 18+ with photo ID. And we never sell, supply or arrange cannabis for anyone. That's not us being stiff. That's how a long-running, honest business stays open.

How much does a private weed tour in Amsterdam cost?

Private tours start at €295 excl. VAT for the whole group. That's the price for your group, not each person. Ask us for the exact quote for your date and group size.

Let's do some quick maths for the Americans and the Brits. Our group tours start at €27 per person. If you have a group of eight, a private tour can start to look very fair. At the time of writing, €295 is roughly in the range of what many people spend on one nice dinner for two in a big American city. Or a decent round at the pub for a big group back in the UK, if your mates are thirsty.

What's included:

  • A licensed adult host, either Erik or a guide Erik hired and trained himself
  • Two to three licensed coffeeshops, chosen for your group
  • Plain-English explanations of the law and the history
  • Help reading a coffeeshop menu
  • Honest tips for food, drinks and the rest of your night

What's not included:

  • Cannabis products. If you choose to buy, you buy them yourself.
  • Food and drinks.

A word on tipping. In the Netherlands, tipping is not required the way it is in the US. Locals often round up or leave 5–10% for good service. On a tour, a tip is a thank-you, never a must.

What happens on a private cannabis tour, step by step?

Every tour is a bit different. But here's what a typical private evening looks like.

Meeting your host

You meet your host at the agreed spot. Look for the orange umbrella. Your host checks everyone's photo ID. Passports and driving licences both work. Then you chat for a minute about what your group wants.

The walk and the history

Next you walk. The old center smells like canal water, waffles and wet brick. Bikes ring their bells at you. Your host tells the story. Cannabis is not legal in the Netherlands. It is tolerated. The Dutch word is gedoogbeleid, which means "tolerance policy." Since a 1976 change to the Opium Act, the Dutch have treated soft drugs and hard drugs as two different things.

That one choice changed the city. If you want the long story, read how Amsterdam became the world's weed capital.

The first coffeeshop

Inside, it smells green and a little sweet. There's often music low in the background. Your host shows you how to read the menu. You'll learn the difference between weed and hash, what a pre-roll is, and why you should ask for "pure" if you don't want tobacco. Many Americans are surprised that Europeans often mix weed with tobacco in joints. Just ask for no tobacco.

Coffeeshops don't sell alcohol. And since 2008, you can't smoke tobacco indoors in bars and cafés. So many shops offer pure joints or vaporizers.

The second and third stops

Each stop shows you something new. One might be an old-school shop with locals reading the paper. Another might be more modern. Your host keeps the pace right. If someone wants to stop at a shop for snacks, you stop. It's your tour.

The finish

At the end, your host gives you honest tips for food and the rest of your night. That might be a brown café, a late snack, or a canal-side walk home. A bruin café means "brown café." It's an old Dutch pub, named for walls stained by years of smoke and beer.

The rules you need to know (at the time of writing)

A good tour keeps you out of trouble. Here are the basics. Rules change, so treat these as true at the time of writing.

  • It's tolerated, not legal. Coffeeshops sell under strict rules. People often sum them up as AHOJG: no advertising, no hard drugs, no nuisance, no under-18s, and no large sales.
  • 5 grams a day. That's the most a person can buy per day.
  • The back door is illegal. Shops can sell to you. But the supply coming in the back door is still illegal. It's the city's famous contradiction.
  • No smoking weed on the street in the Red Light District. Since May 2023, it's banned there, with fines. Many other public places limit it too.
  • Hotels often ban it. Check your hotel's rules. Many say no smoking in rooms at all.
  • Never take it home. Taking cannabis out of the Netherlands is a crime. In the UK, cannabis is a Class B drug. In the US, federal law and US Customs apply, even if your home state is legal. That goes for vapes and edibles too.

Edibles and space cake: go slow, then go slower

Here's where most visitors get into trouble. It's not the joints. It's the cake.

Space cake and other edibles take a long time to kick in. Often 1.5 to 2 hours. Sometimes longer. And the effects can last 6 hours or more. The classic mistake goes like this: "I don't feel anything. I'll have the rest." Then, an hour later, the whole cake arrives at once.

Our simple rules:

  1. Eat a real meal first.
  2. Take a quarter or half of a piece. Not the whole thing.
  3. Wait at least 1.5 to 2 hours before you even think about more.
  4. Drink water. Skip the beer.
  5. Never drive or cycle high. Amsterdam bike lanes are fast and unforgiving.

If someone feels bad, keep it calm. Find a quiet place. Give them water and something sugary. Let them rest. It passes. In a real emergency, call 112.

On a private tour, your host can watch your group more closely. That's one more reason nervous groups go private. For more, see our friendly guide to space cake in Amsterdam.

Private tour vs group tour: which should you pick?

Honestly? Both are good. Here's a quick way to choose.

Pick the group tour if:

  • You're travelling solo or as a pair on a budget
  • You like meeting new people
  • The listed times work for you

Pick a private tour if:

  • You have four or more people and want to stay together
  • You want a time that isn't on the calendar
  • You want more questions, more pace control, or a quieter feel
  • Someone in your group is nervous, older, or needs fewer stairs
  • You want to add dinner, a cruise or a full concierge day

At Oranje Umbrella, we've run both for 14 years. We have over 4,000 verified reviews across GetYourGuide, Tripadvisor and Google. Our tours have been featured on Netflix. The care is the same either way. The private tour just gives you the keys.

How to enquire about a private weed tour

This is easy. Go to our private tour enquiry section on the homepage. Tell us a few things:

  • Your preferred date and a backup date
  • Your start time, roughly
  • How many people are coming
  • Everyone's age (all must be 18+)
  • Your language
  • Your vibe: chill, lively, history-heavy, first-timers, or old pros
  • Anything we should know, like mobility needs
  • Whether you want help with dinner, a cruise or other plans

We reply with options and a quote. Simple. You can also email Erik directly at Erik@oranjeumbrella.com.

A tip from me: book early for weekends, King's Day in April, and the busy summer months. Good hosts get booked. If you're not sure when to come, think about spring or early autumn, when the city is calmer.

Mistakes to avoid on a private cannabis tour

We love our guests. We also see the same slip-ups every year. Dodge these and you'll have a great night.

  • Coming on an empty stomach. Eat first. A cone of fries counts. A proper dinner counts more.
  • Mixing with alcohol. Weed plus beer is how good nights end early. Pick one.
  • Forgetting ID. No ID, no tour. No exceptions. Bring a passport or driving licence.
  • Walking in the bike lane. The red lanes are for bikes. Cyclists here don't slow down. They ring once and that's your warning.
  • Taking photos of people inside shops. Locals are just living their lives. Ask first, or don't.
  • Smoking on the street in the Red Light District. It's banned and you can be fined.
  • Packing leftovers in your suitcase. Finish it, give it away, or toss it. Never fly with it.
